The wife of U.S. Vice President Joseph Biden met with 14 HIV-positive women who are rebuilding their lives thanks to the Women's Empowerment and Education Program (WEEP) run by HEART. Along with her son, daughter and 9-year-old granddaughter, Dr. Biden listened as two WEEP beneficiaries, Rhoda and Jane, shared how they overcame the stigma of HIV, learned new skills to earn a livelihood and now care for other HIV-positive women in their community. During the visit, HEART Executive Director, Vicky Winkler, told Dr. Biden the project helps 1,782 mothers and grandmothers care for children whose parents died from HIV and AIDS-related illnesses. She further talked about the transformations she has seen in beneficiaries and the power of Dr. Biden’s visit, "This (the visit) is a big boost of hope to them. Before they came to the program, they could not look you in the eye because stigma was very high." Since 2007, CAP Kenya has worked with WEEP to strengthen its management and accountability systems and improve the quality and range of community-level services for women and children made vulnerable by HIV and AIDS. Dr. Biden and her family then visited Beacon of Hope. BOH provides comprehensive HIV and AIDS services for the township of Ongata Rongai. During the Second Lady’s two-hour visit, she talked to women who had never earned a regular income until coming to BOH, where they gained income-generating skills, including carpet weaving, spinning, beading and tailoring. With CAP Kenya’s technical assistance, BOH staff have bolstered their managerial and technical skills, and the organization has enhanced its fundraising capabilities, enabling it to build and equip the only HIV/AIDS Comprehensive Care Centre in its District, a kindergarten for 160 children as well as a vocational training center.
